Rainlight didn't say anything but the look she gave him was very sceptical.

"It is very beautiful, even with the danger of Threadfall. There are Gathers every sevenday or so. Everyone comes in their very best. There are races and the Harpers preform." Rainlight smiled at the memory. "I was very good at winning bets on the races. That's how I managed to earn marks to buy things."

He nodded. "It sounds lovely..." He said. "On my world they have tournaments where people are put against monsters. Most die, but some win the money they need to get into a decent city, where it's safest." He recalled. The cities were hardly 'safe'....

"Your cities must be like the Holds of Pern. They are the safe places to be during Threadfall. Though I lived Holdless most of my life." Rainlight said. "During the Intervals there are Games every turn that the Weyrs take part in to keep in practice."

"Those are the places that the dragons and their riders live." Rainlight explained.

"They have places to live? There's more than one?" He asked, astonished. Both questions almost blended as one.

Rainlight nodded. "There are about six full Weyrs. They are spread across Pern to protect it from Thread."

"I see..." The man said. "We have a few dragons, but only one has a rider. And we must fight against the ancient's ghosts until one of us dies..." He said. "It is our destiny"

"What else can we call them? The ancients themselve are gone, but their creations still haunt us...." He explained.
