She smiled. "Stop it, someone will see us," she said, looking around. "Besides, you don't know much about my family. They'll be eager to see me."
Eager was right. She feared that eagerness and what it could mean for her real family.

He grinned back at her.
"You must be pretty nervous about seeing them again." He said, his face taking on a more serious look.

"Uncle Nathan and Aunt Miala our the only relatives I have left," she said, leaning into Largo a little. "That's why I'm worried."

Largo pulled her closer as she leaned into him.
"When was the last time you saw them?"

"When my Grandmother was on her deathbed." Her eyes looked out into the distance, unfocussed. "I told you about that day. I was six. Did I ever tell you about why she didn't want me?"

Largo held her in a way that clearly said, 'I'll always want you'.
"No, I don't think you did..." He said, softly.

"I wasn't born a boy. The family needed a male heir, but Miala was barren, which meant it was up to the younger brothers to keep the line going. My other Uncle never even married, and I was an only child. At that rate, my family would lose its power." She stroked Andrew's head.

"Silly family systems." Largo muttered, pulling his wife and his son closer. He didn't want them to get caught up in such stupid things.

"It might seem silly to you," she said pulling away the slightest bit, but not far. "But in Candustine that's the way it's been done for generations. Look, I'll just get to the point: I think he might be in danger if Uncle Nathan didn't have any children of his own."

Largo frowned slightly. "In danger from who?" He asked.

"Other families in Candustine and some just outside the borders," she said. "Uncle Nathan is a very important person, and, like I said, if he doesn't have any children of his own..." She trailed off. How could she tell Largo that he had unknowingly married into the most powerful family in the land? And how was she to tell him why they were powerful? She cast her eyes towards the ground. She knew what Candustine thought of the ruling family.

"If they don't have a son of their own?" Largo prompted, while he ran a hand comfortingly down her arm. She should know she could tell him anything.

"Largo, lots of people are after the land of Candustine. Gold mines, trading stations, uncut forests, all for the taking. If there is no one to inherit it when Uncle Nathan dies, it's up for grabs. My uncle was quite healthy when I saw him last, but this is something that the greedy will kill for." She paused, letting her words sink in. "Do you understand what I'm saying?"

Largo smiled. "Of course I do. But we've been through worse. Even if they come after us, we still have the Pride." He assured her.

"Uncle Nathan is basically King of Candustine," she said, not returning the smile. "And since I was the only one to have a male child, that makes my husband the next ruler according to the law. Largo, Andrew is meant to take the throne. His life, as well as the fate of my country, is hanging onto you. If anything happens to Nathan before Andrew comes of age, you have to take over."
